The shoes that Julie Matlin recently saw on Zappos.com were kind of cute, or so she thought. But Ms. Matlin wasn't ready to buy and left the site. Then the shoes started to follow her everywhere she went online. An ad for those very shoes showed up on the blog TechCrunch. It popped up again on several other blogs and on Twitpic. It was as if Zappos had unleashed a persistent salesman who wouldn't take no for an answer.
"For days or weeks, every site I went to seemed to be showing me ads for those shoes," said Ms. Matlin, a mother of two from Montreal. "It is a pretty clever marketing tool. But it's a little creepy, especially if you don't know what's going on." People have grown accustomed to being tracked online and shown ads for categories of products they have shown interest in, be it tennis or bank loans. Increasingly, however, the ads tailored to them are for specific products that they have perused online.

The products that are adding an extra dimension to our lives.
Beyond Pandora
Avatar director James Cameron threw down the 3-D gauntlet in May, predicting that the format would replace today's two-dimensional standard within 25 years. Manufacturers have gotten the memo and are cranking out 3-D versions of tech toys. At the E3 trade show in June, Nintendo rolled out a 3-D version of its handheld gaming console, the DS. (It will probably hit U.S. store shelves next spring.) What's notable about the "3DS" is that players can play in 3-D without wearing special glasses, thanks to a sci-fi-sounding technology called "parallax barrier."

Three Ways to Make Good Use of Twitter |
|
Domingo, 11 de Abril de 2010 21:31 |
 From: PC World
When it comes to Twitter, I prefer to be a consumer, not a producer. In other words, I know no one cares what I had for breakfast, so I don't bother to tweet about it. However, I do care what famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) has to say, because it's usually interesting and educational. So he's among the select few Twitter users I follow.

Under the world's greatest cities, deadly plates |
|
Megacities are something new on the planet. Earthquakes are something very old. The two are a lethal combination, as seen in the recent tragedy in Port-au-Prince, where more than 200,000 people perished -- a catastrophe that scientists say is certain to be repeated somewhere and probably soon, with death tolls that once again stagger the mind.
